Meditation Instruction and Support

“I appreciate your calm and constant state of meditation…” — J.H.

“It’s been an incredible help… your presence has been really really beneficial… I really admire and appreciate the humor you bring… profundity and lightness…” — S.S.

A regular meditation practice is indispensable to the process of unfolding a deeper understanding of your Self, nature and the Mystery within and without. I offer beginning meditation instruction, and facilitate a weekly meditation session to uplift the planet and assist others in deepening their practice.  Sessions are warm and relaxed as we aim to keep it light but go deep.

Meditation Group

Held weekly in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento, every Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm.  A (very) short introductory talk and 40 minute sitting session, with tea and informal conversation afterward. A number of cushions and a few chairs are available; if you have your own cushion you are welcome to bring it.

For those who are new to the group, I ask that you arrange a one-on-one interview before attending so that we can get acquainted and I can answer any questions you may have. Please complete the form below to schedule your interview or to get more information. You might also like to read the FAQ below.

Graduates of Magdalen University (or those currently enrolled) can skip the initial interview, but feel free to submit the form anyhow for directions, etc.

Beginning Meditation Instruction

Meditation is a practice and capability that develops and deepens over a long period of time, but clear instruction can help you make a solid start and avoid some common pitfalls. For those looking to take up or refine the practice, I am happy to offer simple and straightforward beginning instruction and share insights gained from my own experience. Below are answers to some common questions.

How much experience do you have?

I’ve been practicing meditation since I was in my twenties (so let’s just say thirty years, give or take).  I’ve struggled mightily with the requisite self-discipline, fallen asleep, fallen over, gotten bored, gotten discouraged, and made all the typical rookie mistakes.  It was worth it, but I’m hoping I can save you some time and get you off to a faster start.

What kind of meditation do you teach?

Good question.   “Meditation” is often used as a kind of umbrella term that covers a lot of different techniques, to include guided meditations, visualization, forms of inquiry, contemplation, and internal alchemy, to name a few.  While they all have their applications, I feel that a solid grounding in what Buddhists call śamatha (“calm abiding”) forms a foundation which is necessary to the other forms of meditation.  So I recommend starting there.

Do I have to believe anything?

No, not really.  Primarily we just want to observe and sense what’s actually there and present in the moment.  Some faith is helpful, in that without a sense that meditation’s worth doing and that something will come of it, one isn’t likely to persevere with the practice for long.  But if you’ve read this far, you’re already good on that count.  Understanding one’s motivation for practicing is important as well, but in my experience motivation can be a mysterious thing and is something we continue to investigate and deepen our understanding of over time.

How much does it cost?

While I charge for Tarot and Astrological readings, there are some things which I believe should always be given freely, and meditation instruction is one of them.  So, no charge.
